Bialetti Moka Express Italian Coffee Maker

The Bialetti Moka Express Italian coffee maker is a timeless classic thanks to its design, results, and ease of use.

Alfonso Bialetti, an Italian engineer, designed this coffee maker that has become an icon of coffee and made in Italy .

He did so in 1933, after realizing that there was a need for a coffee maker that offered results similar to those of professional machines, but at home.

With this, he managed to get not only Italy, but half the world, to definitively stop making coffee in a pot.

Alfonso Bialetti named this invention—which is even in design museums—the Moka Express coffee maker, in honor of the port of Moka, in Yemen, where the modern history of coffee begins.

How an Italian Moka Express Coffee Maker Works

The Bialetti Moka Express Italian coffee maker has a simple yet ingenious design.

It consists of three main parts: the boiler or lower part, the coffee filter, and the upper part that collects the infused coffee.

It has other parts, such as a valve, a rubber seal, and a plastic handle, to improve the use of these three main parts.

The operating principle of a Moka Express is simple : Water is heated in the boiler.

When boiling, it generates pressure that forces the water through the filter with the coffee and infuses.

The upper compartment collects the infused coffee.

Once all the water has passed through the filter and is in the upper compartment, the pressure makes the coffee maker sing, emitting the characteristic sound we've all woken up to so many mornings.

Features of a Bialetti Italian Moka Express coffee maker

Although we can find other brands that today manufacture coffee makers similar to Bialetti, this brand is the original and they continue to manufacture to this day.

The Bialetti Moka Express Italian coffee maker is made of recyclable cast aluminum.

It features the characteristic octagonal design of the boiler and a removable valve for easy inspection and cleaning.

The handle is made of aluminum and plastic so you can move it without getting burned when it's on fire.

This Art Deco-inspired design, originally by Alfonso Bialetti but with some improvements, has won awards and is found in museums such as MoMA in New York.

With this reputation, it can't be missing from your home!

How to make coffee in a Bialetti Italian Moka Espresso maker

Preparing coffee in a Bialetti Moka Express Italian coffee maker is very simple, but no less delicious.

First, we recommend heating the water in a kettle. Once it's hot, fill the kettle to the valve (and no higher!).

We fill the filter with ground coffee ( it must have the appropriate grind for this coffee maker ) to the top, but without exceeding or piling it up and without pressing it, and we put it in the boiler.

Then we screw on the top part with the boiler (and the filter inside) and put everything on the fire.

Soon we'll see the coffee start to flow out of the top compartment. Once we see it start to splash onto the lid, we'll remove the coffee maker from the heat.

And then we'll hear our coffee maker sing. That very special song that has brightened so many mornings.
